Positive Behaviour Support Resources for supporting neurodivergent children, teens and adults.

What is a functional behaviour assessment?

A Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) is a structured process used to analyse data about a student’s behaviour to understand why it is occurring. By examining patterns in triggers (antecedents), the behaviour itself, and what happens afterward (consequences), the FBA helps identify the function or purpose the behaviour serves—such as seeking attention, avoiding tasks, or responding to sensory needs.

The insights gained from an FBA are used to develop effective, personalised strategies to reduce challenging behaviours and teach more appropriate alternatives. It’s a core part of Positive Behaviour Support and helps ensure interventions are evidence-based and tailored to each student’s needs.
