Can I Track Student Behaviour without their permission?

In most school settings, you can track student behaviour without their direct permission, especially if it is part of your professional responsibilities to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment. However, ethical and legal guidelines must be followed.

For younger students, parental or guardian awareness is usually sufficient. In secondary settings, it's best practice to inform students that behaviour is being monitored as part of classroom management or support planning. If data is being shared externally or used in formal assessments (like a Functional Behaviour Assessment), consent from parents or carers is often required—particularly if sensitive or identifiable information is involved.

Always follow your school’s policies, local regulations, and privacy laws such as the UK’s GDPR or Australia’s Privacy Act, depending on your location.
