Course Overview
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that impacts brain development, resulting in persistent challenges with social communication, social interaction, and repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or activities. Without appropriate support, these challenges can escalate and significantly affect a child’s academic progress, social relationships, and independent functioning.
This professional development workshop equips caregivers, educators, behaviour support practitioners, disability staff, and allied health professionals with knowledge and strategies grounded in the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) framework. Participants will learn how to use PBS to identify the underlying needs of students with ASD, adapt environments, and implement proactive strategies that promote engagement, independence, and wellbeing across school, home, and community contexts.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, participants will:
- Understand the definition and core characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
- Identify the social, emotional, motor, cognitive, sensory, and communication needs of individuals with ASD.
- Apply the Positive Behaviour Support framework to address these needs in a structured, person-centred way.
- Learn how to implement proactive, active, and reactive PBS strategies across settings including home, childcare, school, employment, and community.
