It is common for children, adolescents and young adults to occassionally argue with authority figures, aggravate others, blame others for their own actions, refuse to comply with a request or abide by rules. However, these behaviours are often the result of situational factors or a developmental phase and are short-lived in nature. When these types of behaviours persist, this may lead to a diagnosis of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD).

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th edition (DSM-V) (APA, 2013) as a pattern of angry/irritable mood, argumentative/defiant behaviours or vindictiveness towards authority figures. According to the DSM-V, the first symptoms of ODD appear in early childhood, on rare occasions these emerge after early adolescence.

Causes of Oppositional Defiant Disorder

Research has not yet determined the cause of ODD, however, several risk factors are known to contribute towards the development of ODD, including:

  1. Genetic factors – ODD can be inherited in families who have a history of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), substance use disorders or mood disorders,
  2. Physiological factors – abnormal brain chemical activity or neurotransmitter functioning,
  3. Temperamental factors – the individual may have a historically difficult temperament,
  4. Environmental factors – the environment in which the individual resides can be a risk factor in itself, specifically:
    • Lack of adequate supervision
    • Caregiver rejection and neglect
    • Caregiver discipline is too harsh, relaxed or inconsistent
    • Caregiver criminality
    • Disharmony in the home
    • Lack of adequate monitoring
    • Caregiver mental health difficulties
    • Caregiver substance abuse
    • Caregiver criminality
    • Physical or sexual abuse
    • Institutionalisation
    • Frequent change in caregiver
    • Being part of a large family

Associated Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties

Those with ODD may present with a number of emotional and behavioural difficulties as described in the DSM-V (APA, 2013):

  • Short temper
  • Easily annoyed
  • Angry and resentful
  • Frequently argues with others, including adults
  • Refuses to comply with rules or requests from others, including adults

  • Blames others for their own actions
