Courses are developed by Dolly Bhargava, NDIS Registered Specialist Behaviour Support Practitioner and Speech Pathologist, drawing on over 26 years’ experience supporting individuals with emotional and behavioural support needs and a focus on practical strategies that can be applied in everyday settings.

Positive Behaviour Support vs Traditional Discipline

Positive Behaviour Support focuses on understanding why behaviour is occurring, rather than simply trying to stop it.

Punishment, yelling or other reactive approaches may sometimes stop a behaviour in the moment, but they do not necessarily address the factors contributing to the behaviour or teach the person what they can do instead.

PBS takes a different approach. It considers the person, their environment, communication, skills, needs and the situations in which behaviours occur. This information can then be used to develop proactive supports and teach meaningful alternative skills.

Behaviour can also communicate important information. A person may be communicating that something is difficult, uncomfortable, overwhelming, confusing or unavailable to them. Understanding this can help parents, educators and support professionals respond in ways that are more effective, respectful and supportive.

Our online Positive Behaviour Support courses provide practical strategies for supporting communication, emotional regulation, social participation, independence and other skills that can improve everyday quality of life.

The Importance of a Positive and Proactive Approach

Positive Behaviour Support is not only about responding when behaviours of concern occur. A major focus is on prevention and skill development.

A positive and proactive approach may include:

  • understanding triggers and contributing factors
  • adapting environments and activities
  • improving communication and choice
  • supporting emotional regulation
  • teaching alternative and replacement skills
  • increasing independence and participation
  • strengthening positive relationships
  • monitoring progress and adjusting support over time.

The aim is not simply to reduce behaviour. It is to help the person develop meaningful skills and participate more successfully in everyday life.
