Strategies to Support Children and Adolescents with Attachment Disorders

About this Workshop

It is not unusual for children with attachment disorders to be enrolled in schools, childcare centres and other such settings that we work. These children are often the target of labels such as attention seeking, anxious, aggressive, manipulative, or highly controlling. This labelling can result in us implementing ineffective behaviour management strategies, which in turn can negatively affect the child’s progress and development. Therefore, it is critical that we develop our knowledge about attachment disorders and how to approach them.

Strategies to Support Children and Adolescents with Attachment Disorders is an interactive workshop that will provide you with the knowledge and tools to foster a secure bond with the children in your care to provide them with an optimal foundation for life.

Assessing – Managing – Preventing Challenging Behaviours

About this Workshop

When a child begins to present challenging
behaviours, the climate of the room can
change dramatically. Often a considerable
amount of time and energy is spent on the
child with the challenging behaviours, which
impacts the other children in the classroom.

Before trying to change the child’s behaviour,
it is important to understand why they are
acting this way so that the strategies applied
will be positive and effective. Assessing –
Managing – Preventing Challenging
Behaviours is an interactive workshop that
will introduce you to the Positive Behaviour
Support (PBS) framework so that you can
effectively assess, manage and prevent
challenging behaviours in children you
support.

Self-care for Parents, Educators, and Professionals: Happiness, Wellbeing, and Resilience

About this Workshop

As parents, educators, disability support staff
and professionals, our own needs often take a
back seat when other people and things in life
need attention. But not looking after ourselves
can leave us feeling stressed, disillusioned,
exhausted and burnt out.

As the saying goes: “You can’t pour from an
empty cup. Take care of yourself first.”
Research shows that when we “fill our own
cups”, we have more patience, energy, and
passion to spread to others. Self-care for
Parents, Educators, and Professionals:
Happiness, Wellbeing, and Resilience is an
interactive workshop that will provide you with
information on the importance of self-care and
offer a range of practical strategies that can be
used to improve your health, happiness and wellbeing.

Developing Emotional Regulation Skills in Children and Adolescents with Anxious, Oppositional and Aggressive Behaviours

About this Workshop

Research has shown that children with
emotional regulation skills do better in school,
form stronger relationships, have fewer
behavioural problems and generally lead
happier, healthier and less stressful lives.

Not all children learn these skills well while
growing up and need explicit teaching to
develop emotional regulation skills. Without
adequate guidance, students often adopt
ineffective ways of dealing with stressful or
difficult situations, such as avoidance or
defensive behaviour. Developing Emotional
Regulation Skills in Children and Adolescents
with Anxious, Oppositional and Aggressive
Behaviours is an interactive workshop that will
provide you with strategies for guiding
children to develop emotional regulation
skills.

Teaching Children and Adolescents Affected by Trauma

About this Workshop

We are seeing greater numbers of children
of all ages who have experienced abuse,
neglect or are the victims of household
dysfunction entering our care in childcare
centres, preschools and schools. Children
who have experienced such traumatic
events have developed strong neural
pathways associated with fear and survival
responses. Research shows that consumed
by fear, these children find it difficult to
achieve a state of calmness that would allow
them to learn, grow and develop (Perry,
2004; Schore, 2001; Stein & Kendall, 2004).

Teaching Children and Adolescents
Affected by Trauma is an interactive
workshop that provides an understanding of how educators can engage in trauma sensitive environments to establish safety, empowerment, collaboration, choice and trust in children in their care, and foster cognitive-social-communication development.

Promoting Active Learner Engagement in Children and Adolescents with Disabilities

About this Workshop

How to teach children with disabilities is the
biggest “knot” and challenge of education
today (Glat, 2013). Research consistently
shows that the more time children of all
ages are actively engaged in the
curriculum, the more they learn. Active
learning requires the child to engage and
sustain attention, participate actively,
maintain high levels of motivation, and
complete assigned tasks. Yet many
children with disabilities experience
difficulties in all of these areas.

Simply encouraging the child to actively
participate in a task is seldom enough.
Educators need to be able to adapt the
curriculum effectively by matching their
teaching strategies with the child’s needs.
Promoting Active Learner Engagement in
Children and Adolescents with Disabilities is an interactive workshop that explores a range of accommodations and modifications that can be made to the curriculum to assist children with disabilities in maintaining focus and attention, actively participating in learning activities, and being motivated to carry a task through to completion.
